Task 1: Common Visuals Bank (Line, Bar, Pie, Table)

Quick selector

  • Line: time trends, peaks, turning points

Card 1. Line chart play

Scan in 30 seconds
Units, years, biggest rise or fall, crossover, stable series.

Overview pattern
Overall, X increased while Y declined, and X overtook Y after YEAR.

Detail moves

  • Group by shared pattern: rising vs falling
  • Prove each claim with 1 or 2 key figures

Frames

  • A rose from 20 to 45.
  • B fell by 12 to 18.
  • C remained stable around 30.

Do not explain causes.

Card 2. Bar chart play

Scan in 30 seconds
Find highest, lowest, close pairs, wide gaps.

  • Use differences and multiples

  • P was significantly higher than Q.
  • R exceeded S by 14.

Largest slice, smallest slice, near halves, combined small slices.

  • Convert slices to rankings and simple ratios
  • For two pies, state percentage point changes

Frames

  • A accounted for roughly one third.
  • B made up about a fifth.
  • A fell by 12 percentage points between 2000 and 2020.

Card 4. Table play

Scan in 30 seconds
Pick a comparison angle: by row, by column, or by extremes.

  • Group similar figures and highlight the largest gaps

4 step writing plan

  1. Intro: Paraphrase the task and name the visual, scope, and units.
  2. Overview: Two big trends or rankings, plus one standout feature.
  3. Details A: Group 1 with 2 to 3 precise numbers.
  4. Details B: Group 2 with 2 to 3 precise numbers.

Speed drills pack

  • Line: Write an overview using net change and one turning point.
  • Bar: Rank and quantify the gap between first and last.
  • Pie: Convert two slices into a simple ratio.
  • Table: Pick one column and summarize with a highest, lowest, and gap.
